Grandparents Day Play

Congratulations to the Tenth Age boys and girls on a wonderful Grandparents Day performance.  For our annual Tenth Age play, the boys performed "The True Story of Thanksgiving".  This five-scene play presented a humorous account of how some events during the Piligrims' first year in Playmouth may have occurred.  The 10-2 boys would like to send a special thank you to Mrs. Elliott for writing the music and assisting with our rehearsals.

Tall Tales

Our reading class is working together with Mr. Mascuch's class to create tall tales.  Using the selections we have read from American Tall Tales as inspiration, the students are working in small groups to plan their own stories.  Next, they will use the "Story Jumper" web site to create their tall tales.  We are looking forward to hearing the final products, which will undoubtedly include many exaggerations!

Place Value and Ordering Numbers

This past week in math group, students continued to develop their number sense and become more comfortable with larger numbers up to the hundred millons place.  After reviewing ordering numbers and place value, the boys and girls participated in a game involving dice. Players took turns rolling six dice, and were awared points based on who created the largest number.

A Scavenger Hunt, Summer Mementos, and More...

The 10-2 boys have been working very hard so far this year.  First and foremost, we have focused on learning new routines, while also getting acclimated to our classroom and the Tenth Age hallway.  During the first few days of school, each of the boys had the opportunity to share a summer memento with their 10-2 classmates.  These discussions sparked many stories about a variety of exciting summer experiences!  The boys were also introduced to 10-2 classroom jobs, worked on organizing their homework binders, explored math games on the iPads, and read about Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Pecos Bill, as we started our American Tall Tales unit.  Together with Mr. Mascuch's class (10-1), the boys also participated in an exciting "scavenger hunt" to learn more about their classmates.

As a reminder, the boys should bring the following items on the first day:
  •  summer reading list
  •  math packet
  •  small memento (to describe a summer memory)

I look forward to welcoming all of the 10-2 boys on Wednesday.  We will have a wonderful year!

A Visit to Gettysburg

The Tenth Agers recently visited Gettysburg, and were transported "back in time" for the day as they learned about the famous three-day battle.  Students began the day with a scavenger hunt through the Visitor's Center Museum, which includes six galleries filled with a wide array of Civil War artifacts. The boys were also able to watch short films on the causes of the war, each of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the results of the war.  The battlefield tour was led by our guide, Michael, who shared a wealth of information and many poignant stories about the battle.  One of the highlights included a role play of a "cannon crew," as the boys learned about the difficulty of using this weapon during the war.  Here are some more snapshots of the day's events...

The "cannon crew" awaits their instructions from Michael.

When the cannon fires, be sure to cover your ears!

"Designing Colonies" in 10-1 and 10-2

After completing our study of the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies in history class, the  10-1 and 10-2 boys started a group project entitled, “Design a Colony.” Each group has worked on planning and designing their own colony, which would fit into one of the three regions we studied. The boys have completed a variety of activities including building three-dimension models, drawing detailed maps, and designing advertisements to attract potential settlers. Some groups also chose to create a colony flag write a song to represent their settlement. Mr. Mascuch and I are very excited to see all of the finished products!

Making 3-D Shapes

We have been studying geometry in math group, and students are currently exploring the differences between two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.  Using foldable patterns, the boys and girls made paper models of many three-dimensional shapes including triangular pyramids, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and cubes.  They also used their models to compare the various attributes (faces, verices, and edges) of these figures.  Prior to cutting out the patterns, students used colored pencils to design their shapes.  This resulted in many artistic 3-D shape creations!

Exploring Pi

This year, Pi Day (March 14) occurred over Spring Break, so the Lower School celebrated on March 7 instead.  As Pi Day approached, the Tenth Agers challenged themselves to memorize at least 25 digits of pi.  The highlight of the day was a special assembly.  Mrs. Holt selected two lucky students - one Ninth Ager and one Tenth Ager - to throw pies at Mr. Wareheim!  During math class, the boys and girls also started  creating color-coded "pi chains" using strips of construction paper.  Each color represented a different digit (0-9), and the students learned that there is no distinct pattern for the digits in pi.  The Tenth Agers recently completed their chains, which are displayed in the Tenth Age homerooms and Mrs. Holt's classroom.

March Reading Madness

Last Friday, the Lower School kicked off its annual "March Reading Madness" with an assembly in the auditorium.   Please encourage your son to "Read Around the World," which is this year's theme. Students have received their 'passport' to travel and record books they have read involving countries around the world.  Suggested reading lists have been provided to help them get started on an amazing journey through books!  If you have any questions, please be sure to contact Mrs. Stone.

Grammaropolis

This week, the 10-2 boys explored an exciting grammar web site, Grammaropolis.  Grammaropolis includes a wide array of interactive grammar lessons, with an emphasis on the parts of speech.  The boys had a great time exploring the various learning tools, and especially enjoyed listening to the many clever (and catchy) grammar songs featured on the site.  The songs that included "rock music" were identified as the class favorites.

Pilot Buddies

This week the Tenth Agers read winter stories with their buddies in Pilot 1.   They read about a wide variety of topics, including penguins, Antarctic expeditions, and snowy days.  Together, the students illusrated a favortie scene or an interesting fact from their book.  The 10-2 boys always enjoy spending time with their Pilot buddies.
